Ranger 9 Transmits High-Res Images of the Moon
On March 24th, 1965, NASA launched the spacecraft called the Ranger 9 which had a mission objective of taking and transmitting high-resolution images of the Moon to the control station, who would in turn broadcast these pictures to American citizens over the television. The significance of this flight, however, was that the spacecraft was sent into orbit of the moon with the intention of a crash landing into the moon’s surface. The goal of this crash landing was to capture close up, high-res images of the lunar surface. During a flight that lasted 64.5 hours, the Ranger 9 transmitted a total of 5,814 good contrast photographs. The mission was a complete success and real-time coverage with live network broadcast coverage of many of the images provided.![]()
