Would you pay eight times the price of an apple for the same apple or even a less appetizing apple? My guess is absolutely not. Maybe you’ve seen the apples-to-apples comparison on our website. If not, check it out. Needless to say, WhatsUp Gold delivers more for your money than the competition. Cough, cough, Solarwinds.

Whether it’s our device-based pricing system, array of plug-ins, or comprehensive and easy-to-use interface, WhatsUp Gold offers a superior value. Our apples-to-apples comparison of WhatsUp Gold vs. SolarWinds Orion pretty much sums it up.

WhatsUp Gold offers:

  • Out of the box support for custom and non-custom MIBS
  • Mobile Access
  • Real-time alerts on Bandwidth Usage Violations
  • Blackout alerting & reporting capabilities
  • Simple and fair price per device – no overuse hidden costs
  • Complete and Modular Security Log Management
  • Conversion of raw traffic into standard NetFlow records
  • Application Performance Monitoring (Standard)
  • Integrated true layer 2 discovery

Solarwinds does not. A more extensive comparison is available in our Whitepaper.

The fact that the capabilities of WhatsUp Gold and Orion are comparable, with a few differences, comes as no surprise given the ever-changing and evolving nature of technology in general. What you may not know is that, punch for punch, WhatsUp Gold comes out on top when you consider the overall cost of ownership. Solarwinds users pay higher acquisition and annual maintenance costs hands down when looking at comparable configurations.

For instance, an infrastructure with 200 network devices (> 2000 network interfaces managed) and 300 servers (>2000 separate monitors) to monitor would require two Orion Enterprise licenses, NPM ($20,975) and APM ($19,995), for a total of $40,970. A configuration with the same device and server count would only require the 500 device license of WhatsUp Gold Premium for $5,195. How do you like them apples?

In keeping up with our spirit of innovation and consistent development, WhatsUp Gold has announced the arrival of its latest version, 14.3, and an updated plug-in, WhatsVirtual 2.0. This represents WhatsUp Gold’s most recent effort to gather and respond to user feedback in order to bring you WUG ninjas a more comprehensive and intuitive product.

You’ve probably recognized that the VMware virtual environment bus is underway and don’t want to be left in the dust. So you’ve migrated some or all of your network to a virtual environment. If this is the case, WhatsVirtual 2.0 is a good step towards starting to manage this environment.

WUG 14.3 offers similar innovation that improves performance and the evaluation process, streamlines the configuration process with preconfigured workspace views, offers the ability to clone devices, and shows consolidated monitors and devices in one report.

Together v14.3 and WhatsVirtual 2.0 house a number of industry firsts:

  • Integration with vCenter to deliver updated and accurate information on real time inventory, status and performance of hosts and virtual machines (VMs)
  • Tracking of all vMotion driven VM movements from one physical  server to another
  • Alerting on all VM restarts and movements driven by VMware High Availability (HA) rules
  • Discovery, mapping and monitoring that gives you complete access to configuring and managing VMware clusters right from your WhatsUp Gold console

These features, paired with WUG’s existing usability and cost efficiency, demonstrate the next generation in network management software; something hard to live without as your network demands shift and grow.

If you’re a college student at heart, then you will love Ipswitch’s upcoming toolkit release. Remember scrounging around for a free meal or giveaways at your alma mater? I certainly do.

The release of WhatsUp Gold Engineer’s Toolkit allows you to exercise the young adult within you once again, while providing much more substantial value. Normally a $995 product, the toolkit will be offered for free as a limited-time promotion.

It is comprised of the most useful tools meshed together with a consistent look and feel for an easy-to-use/learn interface. Unlike the Solarwinds and Manage Engine toolkits, the WUG Engineer’s Toolkit offers an array of tools organized into “most used tools” categories that are controlled from a single user interface:

  • Design
  • Discovery
  • Diagnostics
  • DNS Verification
  • Remote Control
  • Configuration
  • Credentials Management

The tools operate off of one credential library, so the user only has to enter device credentials once.

Keep a look out for this freebie the end of June at the CiscoLive! event in Las Vegas. If you want a heads-up you can sign up for advanced notification from WUG.

You can check out some of the toolkit’s functionality here: http://www.brainshark.com/brainshark/vu/view.asp?pi=zGGzPItCozn6Yz0

Happy Birthday YouTube!

Did you know that while the online video giant’s official birthday is February 14, 2005, it was exactly five years ago today that the very first video was uploaded? Well if you didn’t, now you do.

The video was titled “Me at the Zoo,” shot by Yakov Lapitsky. It was just 19 seconds long and featured one of YouTube’s founders, Jawed Karim, at the San Diego Zoo . . . and it marked the beginning of a new way to share and view video online.

As a business, Ipswitch, Inc. has come to rely heavily on YouTube to help distribute content – from tutorial videos to viral videos – about our WhatsUp Gold product.

If you haven’t already, check out our library of video on the IpswitchWhatsUpGold Channel. You’ll find an extensive list of tutorial videos walking you through nearly every aspect of our product.

As always, we rely on your feedback to make all aspects of WhatsUp Gold the best IT management solution  we can – so if you have an opinion, don’t hold back and comment here!

A recent review of WhatsUp Gold Premium Edition from Aaron Leskiw on networkmanagementsoftware.com poses the question: Does network management have to be complicated?

Obviously, we think it should be just the opposite, and build our network management solutions with the goal of making the life of a network administrator that much easier. Leskiw conducted a pretty in-depth review of WhatsUp Gold Premium, focusing on the usability and simplicity of the product in relation to the robust feature set that it delivers.

The bottom line on the review of WhatsUp Gold Premium Edition? Well Leskiw had this to say: “The big question is: Does WhatsUp Gold deliver on its promise of making your job easier? Yes it does – and very well! All of the features tested performed superbly and the software was simple to install.
